8 Week Throwing Course

Wheel throwing is a method of making pottery on a spinning wheel – it’s very relaxing, mesmerising, and fun! However, it’s not easy!

Come and spend a Tuesday evening or Sunday morning with us at the studio, learn to throw with one of our expert throwing teachers.

Each workshop attendee will have their own wheel for the whole session. Over the course you will create several pieces that you’ll be able to take home with you. These sessions are for up to 10 people.

Course breakdown:

The first 4 sessions will be based on the wheel, learning to throw different forms. You will develop the basic skills of wedging, coning, centering, and pulling in order to create different pieces (such as small cups, bowls, and cylinders).

From session 5 onwards, we’ll focus more on how to decorate your pieces using slips, as well as glazing. You will also get some time to practise the skills you’ve learned with your own projects and ideas.

Session 1 - start throwing on the wheel

Session 2 - refine your skills on the wheel

Session 3 - learn to trim your pots

Session 4 - more throwing + trimming, learn to pull handles

Session 5 - surface decoration and glazing

Session 6,7 + 8 - practise your skills!

This course allows each student to keep 8 pots. If you want to keep more, there will be a charge of £8 per extra item. This is to cover clay, firings and us glazing your pieces for you. We encourage students to be critical and only keep what they know they will use, if you keep practising you’ll make better pieces! We ‘re also trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible and clay can only be recycled before its been fired.

Aprons and equipment will be provided.
